Has Your Baby Suffered from Seizures?

Babies who have hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy may suffer neonatal seizures. Seizures may begin within the first several hours after birth. Neonatal seizures have a different clinical presentation than seizures in older children or in adults. Neonatal seizures can be subtle and difficult to recognize. Subtle seizures may include repetitive facial movements, deviation of the baby’s eyes, or bicycling movements. When a hypoxic-ischemic injury has occurred or is suspected, radiological studies should be done. MRIs can identify lesions showing hypoxic-ischemic injury within days of the asphyxial injury. EEG may identify seizure activity and assist in treatment.

The treatment of neonatal seizures depends on the cause of the seizures. Medications like phenobarbitol, phenytoin, and lorazepam may be given to control neonatal seizures. When a child has suffered an injury related to prenatal care, labor, or delivery, it is understandable for the parents to have questions about the injury, their legal rights, and the legal rights of the child. We welcome the opportunity to talk with you about what has happened to your child and about your legal rights.
